Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA)

What is MUA?

Manipulation under anesthesia is a technique that originated in the 1930's where patients are placed in "twilight" sedation so that the spine can be adjusted and the soft tissue stretched when the patient is in a more relaxed state. MUA is now available at Northeast Spine and Wellness Center for specific acute and chronic pain patients. There are some patients whose acute condition may warrant MUA, but the overwhelming majority of patients who choose MUA as a treatment option are those with chronic pain that have been unresponsive to conventional treatment.

Who is the MUA patient?

Patients whose chronic pain is due to one of the following sources is a MUA candidate: (partial list)

  • Fixed articulations from adhesion syndrome
  • Herniated disc w/out fragment
  • Bulging disc
  • Protruded disc
  • Failed back surgery
  • Fibromyalgia patients
  • Chronic sprain/strain
  • Unresponsive muscle contracture
  • Chronic neuromusculoskeletal conditions
Where is MUA performed?

Northeast Spine And Wellness Center patients will have their MUA procedures performed at a local surgical center. Once it is determined that you are an MUA candidate, medical clearance will be arranged by Northeast Spine and Wellness Center and affiliated our medical and osteopathic physicians, then the MUA will be scheduled at the Surgical center.

Dr. Jay Asks some important questions of interest to Clark residents - Chiropractor Clark Dr. Jay Asks...

Are chiropractors just concerned with the spine?
Our interest in the spine is because it covers the major communications conduit between your brain and your body. As a Clark chiropractor my job is to locate areas (usually along the spine) that interfere with proper nerve communications to and from your brain. Chiropractic adjustments help restore nervous system integrity. In this way, chiropractic care can affect the function of your entire body.
Are aches and pains good or bad?
While aches or pains may be unpleasant, they're merely warning signs. As a Clark chiropractor, I see this all the time. The pain is not the problem! It just means a limitation has been reached and something needs to change. That's when we get to work correcting the underlying cause.
