Common Sleep Disorders
With symptoms ranging from loud snoring to sleepless nights and more, common sleep disorders include:
- Sleep apnea
- And more
Sleep apnea is one of the most common types of sleep disorders out there, typically defined by breathing problems during sleep. Though this type of sleep disorder comes in multiple forms, the most common type is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA); OSA causes pauses or shortness in breath, leaving you gasping for air and impacting your ability to sleep through a night. It’s commonly found in those who are overweight, though it can impact anyone, and is indicated through loud snoring.
Central sleep apnea (CSA) is a less common form of the condition that occurs when the area of your brain that controls breathing stops sending the correct signals. In this case, your body will not even attempt breath for periods of time throughout the night—and you can still suffer from OSA at the same time. This type of sleep disorder is commonly found in people who use certain medications or suffer from other medical conditions but, like OSA, it too can be found in anyone.
Either form of the condition can also lead to insomnia. To avoid this, it’s important to begin sleep apnea treatment as soon as possible.
Effects of Sleep Disorders
Sleep disorders often cause intense drowsiness during the day that can impact your daily life, work, and school. If left untreated, sleep disorders like sleep apnea can also increase risk of:
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- And more
